dang, i always thought it was an error in the game (the "L" being flipped)
I suppose the flipped L is there so that the L always faces the same direction when seen in-game.
I had to do something similar with one of the characters in my GB Studio game. He has one bad eye, so I have to use a different head tile for the left- and right-facing sprites so that the bad eye is always on the same side.

i got a question: is editing your sprites allowed or no?
Most of his animations are made from the various parts, including that one.
Where are the sprites for the damage animation?
