I've always viewed this animation as knuckles going "stop, now follow me" or something like that.

Knuckles' eyes on walking frames 1 and 8 look really cute.

Wow! This version of Knux looks way better than the sprites from the final version of S3. I hope someone can make an expanded version of this sheet, and maybe even a ROMhack of Sonic 3 & Knuckles that inserts this version of Knuckles into the final version of the game.

I think that's a fist as a show of power, or if it is a "come here" gesture, more of a taunt, like "You want it? Come and get it."

I think this is a better look for Knuckles. He's more detailed and looks far more menacing. I don't get why he makes a gesture to Sonic to come closer before running, but whatever I guess.
Every time I see the first sprite, I imagine Knuckles saying: Stop! You're violating the law!

Yeah, sorry for the palette being off in the initial sheet. I used a raw palette exported from Gens while ripping the sprites, which basically explains why the colors were brighter than usual.
