As far as I was able to find on Google, Sega of America never actually gave the bosses names. The badniks appear in the manual of the name, with new names different from the Japanese ones, but the bosses were not shown. And I could find no record of names coming from SOA anywhere, so either they transliterated the Japanese names, or they literally don't have English names at all.

Are we sure it’s not just Japanese vs English names?

@Observer At the same time, there's no harm in keeping it after a slash, since it was indeed intended for the games moreso than their comic adaptation. It's not like how the Archie Comics called Fire Breath an "Assaulting Batter Blimp" in the comic itself, that being a misattribution to the manual's "Flying Battery Blimp."

I feel as though the topic of the names is going to get twisted out of sorts if it proceeds to carry on.
This is where I stand on it: The Fleetway series was an adaption to the games, much like Archie's was. And much like Archie had done, Fleetway had taken more than a few liberties in its adaptation of the game series and the storylines (where applicable) therein.
This extends to their names for the Boss Units, because in 1994, it wasn't like we could get their names to them like we did in Megaman. However, using the names provided by the adaptor, instead of the source, carries with it misconceptions and will result in arguments like this one.
As such, I believe using Sonic Team's intended names would suffice better than Fleetway's, as they made and named the units, not Fleetway; the latter worked with what they had, which was not a lot of on-screen name information for the units.

@Sid That's like saying "Don't call them Goombas, they're only called KURIBO!" Exactly like saying that, in fact.
Names that officially-affiliated localizers give are just as valid as the developers'.

Um, no? The actual developers gave them names. Those are their names.

@Sid An official guide from the makers of the Fleetway comics. As such, they are technically just as official as the Japanese loanword names.

So, why do some of the bosses have 2 names listed? Big Shaker, Twin Hammer, and Drill Mobile are the actual, official names for those bosses. Where did the other names come from?

What Sheet Is The Insta Shield On?

@Jacob: That's what I meant. :P

@Void-the-Bat actually, Tails is using his S2 sprites in this.
Unless that's what you mean. In that case I'm stupid.

@Benjamin: I believe Tails's sprites are the same aside from palette color and assignment differences. Sonic's are a different story though.

I think it'd be more convienent to upload all of Sonic's beta sprites. Sure, they're basically Sonic 2 Sonic, but the palletes and extra sprites make it more unique...but that's just me.

Now we wait for someone to rip the prototype sprites of Sonic and my boi Miles "Tails" Prower!

@pacmastermeow Things would get way too crowded, this has already been discussed on the Sonic & Knuckles page.

Just have a S3K section

Fun fact: There are so many oddities surrounding the general objects and Super Tails' cycling palettes, it's almost a cruel joke.

Same with a playable Tails. He isn't playable at all in the Sonic & Knuckles portion and would be just as misleading.

Yeah, no. The page would become to cluttered with all the content currently exists and has yet to be ripped. And as water palettes exist only in the Sonic 3 half of S3K, it would be misleading to include them in with the Sonic & Knuckles portion.
(BTW this is probably common knowledge, but the final boss has been named Big Arm officially.)
