Why is Sonic using a different sprite in the first frame of the idle rotating animation than the normal idle sprite? It really bugs me.

Probably because of how inconsistent they can be. Sonic's sprites were touched up many times, starting out as S2 sprites before becoming unrecognizable. This resulted in more niche animations using early revisions of the final sprites and never receiving the latter edits.

Yeah shadowman44 in my opinion, this sonic sprite is cooler then his other ones and gives him more attitude which is what he is known for. Also, his foot tapping animation is also used in his continue animation as sonic alone.

None of y'all know that Sonic's Waiting animation when he does that little hand thing before he points at something is just him snapping his fingers.

ok, anti-gravity motion is ok, but running in vertical cylindral structures does use sonic 2's sprites, with sonic 3 pallete

It's actually pretty much the same. The palette even shifts to the Sonic 1 style to accommodate it.

fun fact lol: the first frame of sonic's ending sprite is just the sonic 1 ending sprite recolored lol

Since the Super Sonic transformation and balancing sprites are fixed, should the idle poses and the Special Stage idle pose be corrected, too?

The separate frames for the ICZ Snowboard are missing. There also might be an unused frame for those, but I'm not sure about that
