The life icon is used for the game window itself, along with the "small icons" option in file explorer. The bigger icons are for cases when the life icon would simply be too small. Here's what it looks like at the Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large sizes:

That being said, though, the bigger icons may also be used for the console versions, but I cannot confirm this as I don't own the game on any consoles.
