From what I've seen, no.
In Puyo Puyo (and other "bean games" of the sort), pieces get cleared if there are 4 or more of the same color that are directly connected to each other.
In Friel (both versions), however, clearing pieces only requires 5 of the same color/form to be within any 3x3 area.
