To me it's always made it look like they are being tripped up by the enemy. I think it's supposed to just look like a sort of surprised pose, look at the sprite for being touched by an enemy in Mario Bros arcade. Not the sprite when you're falling off screen, but right before that. They're both similar poses, kind of leaning forward. I think it's supposed to resemble that, the swimming sprite is just the closest thing they had.

Super Mario Bros. is my favorite Toby Fox game

this is awsome

So Retro

Never understood why they decided to use swimming sprites in the shrinking animation

Finally, Super Mario (Dark) World

At the time of writing, this is the 18th most popular sheet on the site.
All 17 of the sheets ranked as "More Popular" are UT/DR stuff.

its true

I just want to make things clear and say that "Big Mario" is actually called Super Mario. Big Mario is a completely different form from Super Mario form that is only seen in Super Mario Maker.

oh, its kinda weird that they're grouped alongside them.

@SmartSam: You mean the 8th and 9th sprites for each group, right before the swimming sprites?
