Yeah, I'm aware of that now. I wasn't too versed in the intricacies of this subject 8 years ago.
It's not the ROM, some emulation palettes have color 23 more bluish instead of violet. In fact, when I started using FCEUX for ripping I decided to change the color to more of a violet since that's how it looks on the actual hardware. It's actually quite difficult to find a 100% accurate NES palette.
I think the unused sprites were suposed to be a win animation :/
