@cryomancer199X: You need to split the red channel of those texture sheets into their own image (green and blue are useless now), then substitute the (greyscale by default) colour palette for that with one of the lines in the respective "Palette" file, values 0-255 correspond to the palette's in the same order from left-to-right. First line's a recolour-friendly template, second line's the default and third onward are alternate palettes.

You can experiment with the *.PAL files I've supplied in the playable characters' submissions.

@Awesomeman235ify & @Temmle_IsAwesome i think what they mean is that the ground and airship themes are the only ones there because they're the only ones with patterns, the underground, underwater, castle, and ghost house themes only use a solid color, with underwater being the dark blue at the bottom of the sheet, and the others being the black next to said dark blue, so technically they are there, but since they're one solid color, they don't take up much room. You're welcome :)

@Doc von Schmeltwick: As someone who's currently working on a ROM hack of SMB3 (NES), I can tell you that they are in fact not separate. One of the first things I did for my hack was alter the palette of the World 1 map, and upon changing the color of the background (technically the ground since it's in a top-down view), the background color underneath the dancing hills didn't change. After looking at the sprites for the dancing hills in the data, I found that the devs (or artists, I guess) actually filled in the empty space with the color of the ground. No clue why they did this, but they sure as hell did.
