imo it's so subtle it's a bit of a minor gameplay issue.

Mar 31, 2020 12:41 AM Random Talking Bush Asset: Spirits (DLC) @LightningStarSC: They're stored separately from the game's update data and is downloaded through Nintendo's BCAT service, meaning that they can be updated in the background at any time without having to update the game itself. It's also the same method that they used to swap out the Splatfests in Splatoon or unlock the extra costumes in Super Mario Odyssey. And this video shows exactly what I mean about them not being part of the game's files, when said data fails to download.

Mar 30, 2020 8:17 PM Rakoon CD Asset: Enemies (Super Mario Bros. 1 NES-Style) That's my view of what the SMB style is. Since the game was an early title, the designs were a mix of ambitious designs, limited knowledge/experience of sprites, and favoring gameplay over looks. This results in boxy characters with (what was considered at the time) detailed designs. Super Mario falls into this being 4 sprites tall, primarily drawn with rectangles and movement never leaves his box. His poses/frames though, makes him come to life.
