Bomb Bloke, while bad, it can never be in the level of the Simpsons: Tapped Out. Trust me, I play a freemium game like this and it actually gives you a lot of shit to do, rather just waste time at the summon gate. While decent spritework, it's lacking for a 20th anniversary title.

Not sure if you've ever sat in front of such a machine, but in my experience there isn't much difference between physically turning the knob and tapping your screen.

The gatcha systems aren't why people play freemium games like this one, though. The collection aspect has some appeal to it, but ultimately it's an aside to the actual gameplay.

@Bomb Bloke Oh. I don't see the appeal in that at all. I mean even pachinko machines involve actually DOING something.

Google would tell you this, but your basic gatcha is like a gumball machine. Insert money, turn dispenser, out comes... something. Could be a valuable something, could be a rubbish something.

Metal Slug Attack's gatcha system is much the same as in many other freemium games - you spend your premium currency ("medals", which you either gain slowly by playing or quickly by spending real cash), watch the flashy animation (by spinning the "crank"), and walk out with your prizes. The prizes you hope for unlock the more powerful units (which are mostly female characters, in MSA's case), which make things easier for you while you're playing the actual game.

Lots of units can be unlocked in other ways (at this point nearly everything from the mainline series is represented in MSA, so there are a few hundred to unlock), but since most of the strongest ones come from the crank, much of what you do revolves around earning enough medals for your next spin.

How on Earth would that even play? Crank? Like a rotating lever?

@Yubari Sugiura: As references, yes, but don't just use the exact same arrangement and spacing (in other words, don't just make the sheet look like a lazy recolouring job).

@Doc von Schmeltwick: Basically what Yubari mentioned, any sorta free-to-play game where you unlock additional cards, characters, etc. randomly.

@Doc von Schmeltwick It's some kind of crank-like machine in japan.
Most games (like FGO and MSA) have the same crank system.

@RTB What's a gatcha? Is it some sort of social game?

@ElGordoPija I asked gussprint's permission for the recolor of his ptolemaic slug sheet for ptolemaic slug ex and he approved, and credited him for it.
@Random Talking Bush Can other people's sprite sheets be used at least for references on how to place them (i.e. deep sandmarine using refs from sandmarine)? I did so while ripping annette's death frames by using odette's death frames by BMlight as refs.

@trans the psycopath: And his Jupiter Queen sheet was just a recolour of c2000mc's Jupiter King sheet.

As I mentioned before, don't just recolour someone else's sheet and submit it as your own. Actually rip it from the game.

@Doc von Schmeltwick: Because gatcha-based games are all the craze. And yeah, I really don't know, but it definitely ain't the Metal Slug I know.

I look at the popularity of this, and I wonder: Why? It doesn't even play like Metal Slug, by the looks of it, and at least half the roster was made up on the spot for it.

ElGordoPija you were just recoloring guessprint's sandmarine from ms5 instead of ripping the deep sand marine from msa thats agenst the rules also there are differences between the 2 besides color. if you want to post an edit it has to be put into the custom/edited section for metal slug

@Imakestorieswithsprites:
"The "complainers" have a point. Yubari Sugiura ripped Destrade, a character not even playable yet. There's no reason the rest shouldn't be up there."

This has been gone over lots of times before. People rip sprites in their spare time, just because they rip one thing doesn't always mean that everything can be ripped immediately afterwards.

Be patient, or rip it yourself!

Quality control is now in effect for these submissions.

Because most of the recent sheets we had gotten were sometimes-recoloured re-submissions of other users' rips without any sort of credit given (some of which blatantly so), those sprite sheets have been removed. From now on, rips for this game must be FROM this game, and if we feel your sheet is essentially copying someone else's, we're going to need proof that the original sprite files were used before it can be accepted.

I shouldn't have to say this, but it pains me to see considering I've ripped a bunch of Metal Slug sprites in the past. :/
