@HammerBros101 Yep, 4 Wii Remotes and the GamePad. Probably dropped due to the differences in controls (even though the non-motion control games can be adapted as there are buttons and a D-Pad, both the motion controls on the GamePad and the Wii Remote are a bit different with one being gyro and the other being pointer).
I think Nintendo at one point considered having games where you can have two GamePads but it didn't pan out, don't know whether it was technical reasons or cost.

Interesting. It seems as though the developers were planning to have five players at some point in development, hence why there are cursors for Player 5, whose main color is purple.

huh that player 5 cursor looks more like one from the stock wii party

@SuperSonicChaos: You can connect four Wii Remotes and the Gamepad. Using all five controllers at once was most likely considered during development.

Probably just for testing purposes.

Wait, a fifth cursor? Why? You can only connect 4 "Wiimotes" To one Wii U.
The Minigame Score counter & Placement Bar (the thing that says 1st 2nd 3rd 4th on the side when in a minigame) both have an unused Player 5 variant!
Check the game's "The Cutting Room Floor" page.
