The "Unused" items are, in fact, not unused.
-The star is used on the title screen to indicate a cleared world with 100% in every level, including bonus ones. One star per world.
-The white effects around Yoshi is used after clearing World 5, when Yoshi is teleported to the World 6 overworld. (I can't confirm if the frame order is accurate, though.)

@Murphmario, so the island is indeed missing ? I'm searching those (I guess no particular reason, just curious, might find a use for them somehow), including the other worlds', any help would be appreciated (Even if it doesn't end up being used the effort is appreciated).

@FlameKittenIDunno The title screen has absolutely no 3D models. The flat part of the island as well as the ocean is a background that's rotated via mode 7, similar to a track in Super Mario Kart.
no, yoshis island used the super fx chip, allowing it to use 3d models, the island being one of those
shouldn't the whole island be here, since it's just a sprite with mode 7?

+ Added note: Title screen island 2 uses colour 11 (black) from its palette for the rest of the background, this is what the pink gets replaced with.
- Why the pink in the first place? Because using black would swallow the rest of the border tiles which are also black.
