Oh now I get it. the way it works is the nintendo moves these sprites around at each scanline to produce the desired shape, only showing the line needed to get the desired width for a given scanline

These two were among my favorite enemies. Mario needs more Nep-E-Nut and Blargg appearances.

Not 100% blaming you for not getting it, but the Gargantuan Blargg actually has a palette cycle.
