Whether or not the red underneath his eyes even is blood, some people still took it that way and were outright horrified. It would've been better hadn't that been there to begin with. (I guess it would've been fine if the "blood" were locked to the Japanese versions since they tend to have more NSFW contents, see EarthBound/MOTHER 2 for example).
