Finally started work on a fan project I'd been conceptually mulling over for a couple years this year and I've been coming back to the page for RS1 every couple of months doing basically a double-take bc lately every time I drop by I've been like, "hang on, this page didn't have this many rips last time, did?" Lol. Thank you so much for this! I never played Romancing Saga 1 and there were next to no rips of its sprites so I had no idea what a great resource it was for studying how to do certain things in the 16x16 FF4-5 style. For instance, I remember one time I tried starting the project before and ran into an issue when I realized that I had no idea how to portray a decent sized canvas tent or a horse-drawn carriage in that style and I didn't really have any references either, but apparetnly RS1 had both of those things! Really, RS1 and LAL have just been *so much* of a boon to my project's aesthetic now that I'm no longer limited to the medieval look of FF4 and 5, it's insane!

Probably to add more color variety. In FFV, sprites only use one palette, meaning you can't mix & match colors (e.g. having blue hair and purple clothes).

Why does the bottom half of each sprite have a separate palette from the top half?
Man, this game is weird.

You fool.

On a less jokey note, here's all the re-uses I noticed:
* Geneic brownhair man = Generic vest man
* Generic brunette woman = Generic woman/Stella
* Generic boy = Generic boy
* Generic girl = Generic girl
* Generic older man = Tycoon Chancellor
* Generic older woman = Generic older woman\Jenica, random old lady in Tule that has a unique sprite for some reason
* Red knight = Galuf's World knight
* Swarthy pirate = Faris' pirate crew
* Lord Rudolf/Theodore = King Tycoon
* Monica = Lenna
* Emperor Melvir = King Walse
* Farah = Dancer
* Ahmad = Unused important-looking guy
* Termittan woman = Queen Karnak
* Gian sleeping = Pirate sleeping
* Skeleton = Tyrannosaur/Chicken Knife dude
* Zombie = Mummy
* Ogre = Generic goblin
* Devil = Abductor/Enkidu

There's probably more, but I didn't want the list to be filled with repeats. Funnily enough, the asset re-usage is why I decided to rip RS1 in he first place. Unfortunately that required me to play through RS1 and experience how undercooked it is. Man, you [not you specifically, but someone] could write a pretty sick video essay on asset re-usage in Square games. FF1's party member template being reused 5 times, RS1 being a weird evolutionary in-between of FFIV and FFV, RS3's NPC sprites being upsized FF6 sprites, Bahamut Lagoon, the well is fruitful.

Notes:
* I'm not 100% sure of what's used and what's unused (all I had to go off was a playthrough as Albert, a letsplay of Claudia, and some quick dips into everybody else's starting scenario. If I got anything wrong, do tell.
* For some unused stuff I had to guess the palette (namely the bone pile, the shadow, and the sprites of Shirach in a dress).
* Apparently the WonderSwan Color version has some exclusive stuff, I should go investigate.
* I attempted to group stuff in a rough order: Main party members, secondary party members, generic NPCs, South Rosalia NPCs, Bafal NPCs, Butcher (since the Coral Sea is only reached from Godongo and that fits roughly between the surrounding NPC groups), North and Central Rosalia NPCs, North/South Estamir and Kjaraht/Frontier NPCs, Knight's Dominion and Valhalland NPCs, NPCs I couldn't find, the Minstrel, vehicles, miscellaneous single-frame sprites, Enemies/Creatures, Humanoid foes, 32x32 NPCs, 32x32 Enemies, the four elemental dragons, and the wicked gods. Those palette boxes you see were created for demonstration purposes and do not appear in the NPC tiles.
* Some secondary party members are grouped separately. This is because Theodore, Red Mage, and Soldier 1 & Soldier 2 use sprites seen elsewhere, Neidhart you only get to fight alongside for one battle in Aisha's scenario, and I do not respect Dowd.
* Yes, the "green devil" enemy is supposed to look like that facing down, I checked.
* Rips of the in-battle sprites are on hold until I find a tool that both suppots 4bpp planar composite (2 x 2) and has a TiledGGD-style method of loading palettes.
* If you're wondering why the top halves of sprites are colored slightly differently (most visible on Hawke's sprites), it's because they use different palettes. I don't know why their layout is so radically different. FFV actually has space for eight NPC palettes, but the last 4 are blank.
* On that note, RS1 actually predates FFV's release by almost an entire year, so FFV is the one that's guilty of recycling another game's assets, not RS1.
