I just watched the boss fight for the GBA version on Youtube and it looks like the melting is just the shell fading away with transparency at the end.
According to Zelda Wiki, a bug prevents Kholdstare's ice shell from melting in the SNES version like it does in the GBA version. Instead it just disappears. Do the melting sprites still exist?
