Lavos' true form, the Core, implies that it was made by an advanced civilization that has control over time itself. The shell allows it to travel through space, looking for planets to feed on. The main body acts as a defense mechanism should the outer shell be defeated. At one point, the people responsible for Lavos lost control over it's animalistic nature and in turn, destroyed it's creators by devouring the planet's life force.
