It is, but that game also doesn't have any sprites. I'm considering ripping my own since I'm knowledgeable about these games, but I don't know how to rip the sprites as of now (without literally screenshotting it and cleaning it up afterward) |
Nov 13, 2022, 10:42 AM * | Morhamms357 | Sheet: Glass Joe |
Glass Joe actually has a dodge sprite that, of course, not many people have seen. It's not unused, though. Search "Glass Joe Dodge" and you should be able to find it, or just try and keep throwing Star Punches at him and you'll be able to see it on the 5th one or so. Not just that, but he (and Don Flamenco) each have unique sprites for their stomach knockout, so that's also something to look into. Edit: Revised the sheet and added the sprites. Edit 2: Wow, this is a crazy new revision! This is so much more accurate with the coloring and tiles than the old one. Love the entire rehaul to the game! |

@Yawackhary You seem to know a lot about prototype history mate. And yes I agree that Sonic 1 still has some unused leftovers in its source code. But back then after Naka said the ROM was lost there was a higher chance of finding it in the mid-2000s. Elsewhere this prototype is different from all of the other prototypes we have seen and I assume there was some pictures on some sort of box art of what I heard. Sonic 2's SW Prototype on the other hand was something else, way apart from the Tokyo Toy Show prototype. Naka said the security wasn't that good so the proto ended up being snatched and released into the public. TTS could've had that chance but it didn't cuz y'know, the whole ROM got lost yada-yada-yada. It's really rare now if we were to uncover the ROM here and looking inside RAM data of Sonic 1 is not gonna help at all. But since TTS and Sonic 1 share differences there "can" be a possible term of finding it, but that's gonna take a lot of work. But just maybe if we can find some RAM data or source code hidden behind TTS we can uncover most things, but not the full ROM. And honestly, SEGA doesn't care if we discover a prototype of either any Genesis, Master System, Game Gear or MEGA/SEGA CD games. I can count on drx but as I mentioned in the previous comment, he'll fail to find the ROM, so really. There is nothing we can do about it. Bummer to say but I really wanted to see the prototype and before I used to do a LOT of research about its history and such. But we just have this, this is where it leads us to as of now. |

@Ton: Because Japan-only? My question is, why are so many games based on 80's American movies Japan-only (Goonies 1, this game)? You'd think importing them to their IP's native country would be a no-brainer... (So help me, if I learn there's a JPN-only Princess Bride videogame...) |

Yes, I noticed that while doing the rips in Golden Egg. This is the only game I know that changes tiles every time within its static levels and the devs probably did this for some kind of visual variety. |
Nov 13, 2022, 5:09 AM | Barack Obama | Sheet: Forest Tileset |
Super Mario World uses a very limited amount of palettes for tiles and sprites. The palette for the wodden platforms on this sheet is also used by tiles in Bowser's castle and the Yoshi coins which are always animated. This means, the palette changes constantly in the background and it only becomes visible when a specific colour from the palette is used. |
Nov 13, 2022, 2:57 AM | MarioFanGamer | Game: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island |
Something to note is that almost all level rips (but not the tilesets) are fundamentally inaccurate (if only slightly) because Yoshi's Island randomly generates the pattern (e.g. the pebbles of the Forest Tileset) of the ground. This is hardly noticeable for most of them (you need a side-by-side image to see what I mean) but it also applies to the 3D Stone tileset where the bricks come with different colours. Of course, it hardly matters and I only made that comment as a fun fact. |
Nov 13, 2022, 2:26 AM | Silverlight | Sheet: Sonic 1 (Tokyo Toy Show Recreation) |
Project A-ko's original film was considered lost for 35 years. Only to find out that it had been at the Togen lab all that time. It was only filed away incorrectly. https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-feature/2021/05/04/feature-the-fantastic-true-story-of-how-project-a-ko-was-lost-and-found Now idk much about retro game archives and preservation admittedly, it may very well be as you say, but there also could be a possibility that it's been misplaced/overlooked in the archives as well? |

Yeah, the ROM and the dev board or cartridge that would have been used is long gone. What will ever remain is what we've have seen, the only other thing we could find is simply more footage from the Tokyo Toy Show event but that's getting doubtful now. In terms of game preservation an area that is pretty bad in general, a fair amount of games have lost their source code/builds/development assets that in some cases only the final version ROM exists (or paper documents/drawings/concept art) and even some commercially sold games are still missing e.g. the original arcade version of Galaxy Force, Garfield: The Lost Levels (a Sega Channel exclusive). It is known that Sega did lose quite a bit of their archives during the Saturn era due to hard drive crashes/failures, Magic Knight Rayearth, Panzer Dragoon Saga and House of the Dead being many of the known casualties plus their headquarters moving throughout the decades. Any prototype that we have we consider ourselves lucky (and a vast majority of prototypes that we DO see were found either in the US or Europe and extremely lucky with the SoA backup QA discs and the UK sourced Sonic 1/3 protos, the rest were leaked from the scene back in the day and ended up on pirated cartridges e.g. the Mega Drive Ninja Gaiden game. Japanese prototypes tend to be quite rare but do pop up). Sega did manage to keep an arcade board of the English translation of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, before its Wii/PS3/360 debut the script only existed in the Activision published home computer ports and either wasn't released or extremely limited as bad English translation bootlegs existed, they also kept a few unreleased games. Who knows, they might have an English build of SegaSonic the Hedgehog lurking about in their warehouse (the Japanese ROM does feature English graphics and the US warning screens but don't know whether it can be enabled). It's actually rather lucky that Sonic 1 either still has its source code preserved (the Saturn Sonic Jam port) or at least some development assets (the mid-2000s mobile port with the UFOs in Marble). |

I'm unsure about the random enemies, but there are 2 Boss Sprites missing, there's a 4th Type of Dragon; Green Dragon and there's also another colour for the Evil Cat Minister, you fight him twice; the second time he's more red-ish. |

There were some more sprites, but I wasn't sure where they were used, so they aren't included on this sheet. I'll provide an image of those here: UPDATE: Apparently I haven't played enough of the game as I'm seeing screenshots of palettes I've not seen before. I'll update the sheet with what I can see soon. |
