Why do I see a sad face, it's unnerving
Where the possibility of prototype is concerned, I doubt it, but I can check at least.
I'd say that they're clouds, though, and we're looking at an analogue to the Pacific Ocean or some grander world ocean from history.

Looking at this map, it appears that Mobius is mostly ocean with a few islands
Never noticed that the backgrounds were different. That is a very interesting detail. Perhaps they did that to show that the Death Egg is ascending into orbit, or one of these two are actually a prototype version of the background.
