Probe should've put more effort into the "Choose Your Fighter" screen. One palette of 16 colors for all fighter portraits is clearly not enough.
Sculptured Software did a better job in MK3. They stacked 2 background layers and used 2 palettes for "Choose Your Fighter" screen, so they had 32 (-1 transparent) colors per tile, which was really clever!
