I think you guys are giving it too much thought; the people making a Genesis port of Action 52 probably don't know much (or care) about videogame history to begin with

Yeah, this isn't the first video game but Pong was the first MAINSTREAM video game, one that people did play even if it wasn't on an Atari machine. It still hold up its place in history, just phrased differently.
Besides it was only over time with historians and the Internet that people were tracing back the history of gaming. Before then you might not know what was the first. Computer Space was still considered to be the first for a while, then Spacewar [via MIT computers], then Tennis for Two [due to a patent] and now seems to be in between Bertie the Brain and OXO both based on Noughts & Crosses/Tic Tac Toe.
