Tails looks even more off model in the prototype
"Pico" also means "very small" in English, such as in "picosecond". Since the console was designed from small children, that's probably why it was called that.
Actually, now that I think about it, the use of "Pico" also juxtaposes nicely with the use of "Mega" in "Mega Drive". I wonder if that was the intent...

Pretty sure the console name comes from the Italian word for small, "piccolo." It's what I think of, anyways.
