The original Team Fortress before this one was a multiplayer exclusive Quake mod by the same team.

@Viscera by 'mod' I meant that in the beginning it was free to download as a Half-Life mod. that's what the tf2 wiki says. and by 'official release' I meant when the game became a paid game on steam. this "official" version is the standalone version, which was released in 2003 according to the tf2 wiki. before that, yes it was a mod. like, come on... the definition of mod varies a lot from person to person. not every mod has to be "unofficial" and not every "official" game made by modifying a game cannot be called a mod. this game can't even be called total conversion, it still has hl1 content. (so much that some deathmatch maps from hl1 can still be accessed in-game, via console codes) edit: the proof that this mod was free, is that there is a page saved in the wayback machine on the sierra website. saying that the game is a 'free' add-on and that it could be downloaded from the website.

@WaterCat It was never a mod (in the sense that it was fan-made) and was an official release by Valve (well, made by Valve, originally published by Sierra) in the first place. It is, however, based on the Team Fortress mod for Quake, which was made by the same people.

@StarmanElite can someone explain it better but... Team Fortress Classic started out as a simple Half-Life mod. and even after its official release on steam, the game still keeps the HL models.
