Good boss, I like

@DiamondmanPixel76 yes, the one in sonic & knuckles is “red eye” which mania’s “crimson eye” is based off of, the only difference is the colors and phase 2.

They reused a boss from Sonic & Knuckles! I know this because in Sonic & Knuckles, at the end of Death Egg Zone, Act 1 you fight a boss like this.

@mariomaster666: Yep! This sprite sheet originally had only the first palette, and was updated with the other three (the second one being one that was pre-Encore that was missed) not long after Encore's release.

Are the last two palettes from Encore Mode or does this rip predate it?

It's not really bizarre, it's a tumorous piece of sprite editing that runs the gamut in flash animations, and has been heavily present in games since Super Mario World 2 used it extensively thanks to the Super FX chip, though some used it before by making the rotating "sprites" layers of background. It's probably my least-favorite spriting element, because it usually looks really ugly. Most SMW2 sprites to do this had really thick outlines because of this. While it certainly makes sense from a graphical storage and "amount of poses" perspective, it's often used extremely superfluously.

Well, that's bizarre. If Denuvo is ever gotten rid of from the Steam version I'll take a peak in-game.

@The Observer. Rotations are done by code. So there's no 45 degree angle sprites.

Pretty sure there are angled versions of the cannons during the second phase.
