Going beyond that, the reason she's split has more to do with the decision to include the superimposed crystal ball... which isn't done correctly anyways since from what I recall, you can still see the white on the ball held by the gray/green ones since it is a different sprite using the red palette. Also the "hurt" section is missing the green.

A manual published in 1988 does not supersede basically everything that's come after. It's "she".
Damn, he (by the manual) obnoxiously appeared so much in the game that they separated Birdo from the bosses.
