@thejohnston Those horizontal pipes are programmed to use the floor palette. Standard pipes are programmed to use the first background object palette.

That's clever the way they used the limited palettes of the NES, but why isn't the vertical pipe in the underwater section green like the horizontal pipe opening?

Headcanon: the pink pipe in the underwater section is actually a clear pipe from 3D world.

@Smoke-The-Pyroling: Yep. Taking the wrong path would sneak you into one of the earlier sections, similarly to how the Endless Staircase in Super Mario 64 works.
