IIRC the SNES port was pretty much ready-to-go when Randy Linden presented it to Williams for their approval.
It was Dolphman referring to "weapon pickups" plural that made me wonder if they were referring to more than the shotgun, and the pistol was the only other thing that seemed suspicious to me.
I know about the story behind SNES Doom, but I thought id might have lent the pistol sprite after they became aware of it and gave their approval. I've thought that ever since I first saw the version Romero shared.

I think Dolphman was referring to what is blatantly just Doom's shotgun. Ironically, it does bear a superficial resemblance to the Development sprite intended for the "double-barreled coachgun" mentioned in the Doom Bible.
Also, the Pistol in SNES Doom was original due to Randy Linden developing the port completely on his own without access to any of Doom's development assets.

It'd be really weird if the pistol was based on Doom's, because its pickup sprite wasn't available until Romero shared it in the 2010s. I'm pretty sure the only hint of its existence before that was a scaled-down version used in SNES Doom's HUD.
Hello, obviously edited Doom weapon pickups
