Likely was reprogrammed. I recall that in the case of chinese ports of Mega Man 1 to 4 (the ones I found that is) for J2ME they were very similar to the NES but had small quirks unique to them (such as the horizontal health bar at the bottom)
Is the mobile version a modified NES ROM running on an emulator or was it reprogrammed to run on modern devices?
I'm so glad this survived as more than just promo screenshots.
