The comments in here got it wrong. "Sub-pixels" are a pixel art animation method. Conflicting pixel resolutions like these are called "mixels"
The fact that this uses subpixels makes it really "SO RETRO!!!1!!!1!!!1!!1!11!""

Man what is it gonna take for game companies to learn that "subpixeling" in pixel art is extremely bad to look at.
