@QuadFactor It's likely it was drawn by a different artist altogether.
I never understood why Blue's final battle sprite looks so different compared to the first two.
I choose to think of that as their choice of weapon in case they themselves are attacked.
Or they could be rough on their pokemon, who knows.

@Zander_TB: It's pretty much a remnant of the pre-Pokémon "Capsule Monsters" era of development, even the player character used to have one.
