The sprites look fine to me, hell I prefer these slightly more than the newer ones in NSMB.

I love how the giant coin is designed after the beta Yoshi Coin/Giant Coin from Super Mario World.
EDIT: Two brick smash frames, and Mario and Luigi were unused. They probably were going to either run by as a cameo, or possibly hit one of the blocks for the player to help them out.
