old comment, but yeah, most older/2D Harvest Moon/SoS games seem to use pre-rendered models as sprites. i suspect even the GBA sprites are pre-rendered models sized really really tiny. the HMDS sprites use a similar style (even alongside the GBA characters) but the characters who have new sprites+weren't in GBA look more manually drawn in comparison.
