The Thwomp's face I based entirely on the face of a particularly snooty train from an animated kids' film (ugh, I hate associating cartoons as just kids' stuff) *The Little Engine that Could* and he would have functioned the same as he did in the games he's from. You have asleep, waking, going to sleep, look left, look down left, look down right, look right, player gets close, plunge. The nightmare face was just to horrify gamers and give an incentive not to get too close.
