A Popeye arcade game did end up being made in the following year.
@MM84 They didn't "lose" the license, they pitched it but it was rejected, so Miyamoto replaced the Popeye characters. After DK became a hit, they did end up letting them make a Popeye game in a similar style, but it's far less iconic.
Yep, Donkey Kong was originally a Popeye game but Nintendo lost the license so it became the game we know today and launched two gaming franchises
