They're the same thing. The version I was referring to has been publicly available for a while now, and used Dangerous Dave from one of John Romero's earlier games as a placeholder for Mario. It was more recently that we got footage of a version where Mario is actually Mario, which is the one you're thinking of.
@RaymanFan1995 Yes it's true, it's based on this, I thought it was obvious.
@SiFi: If you're talking about the MS-DOS versions of the sprites, I believe those are based on the cancelled MS-DOS version of SMB3.
