I had contemplated making a version based off of the old design, but considering this design will likely be the way he's portrayed for the foreseeable future, I don't think there's much of a practical reason to pursue that. At that point, I think 9Bit's M&L DK does an excellent job at emulating his Rare design, just at a smaller scale.
Edit: I will say, however, that I tried to make the sprite sheet as edit-friendly as I could by breaking up many of DK's parts. So I fully support anyone who wishes to make their own adjustments, poses, edits, etc.
