As for the checker block it's pallet shifting matches the hit block for the most part, so that's a hint.

I do find it hilarious these bootlegs always default to replacing Troopas with snails. I mean yeah, slow animal with a shell, but COME ON! Nintendo sorta did it themselves with Ishnail in PMTTYD!
