Overworld Enemies		 And the second one appears to be Julius / Pogo, from Castelian, the walker mech seems to be the one from Gradius and the ship at the bottom looks like the R-9 from R-Type. Yep, they're not even subtle.

My question was if the similar character designs were because the developers recalled the character designs from this game (either from working on it or playing it themselves) or some miraculous coincidence that happened repeatedly in relation to this specific game. It's a purely speculative question, and dimentios resemblance is close enough to harley Q. for it to be possible for dimentio to have be either intentionally or subconsciously based on her.

Perfect Chaos		 there were years of people saying any sonic sprite style that wasn't 8-bit or advance/battle style was genesis.
Part of alot of early spriters liking to sound like they knew what they were talking about while also fitting in with the older, more talented spriters who came before.
It was alot of "anything that isn't genesis is boring/lazy/only used for recolors" most people have grown out of it but there was alot of mob mentality around people using a certain style that lead to terms getting very confused. Similar stuff happened with dragonballs game boy styled sprites.
