My favorite is the Japanese one as it is the most colorful, the USA one is my second favorite as I like the colors but not as much as the Japanese one, and the European one is just so... orange. |

Just imagine how cool it would have been if Nintendo did some "Four Swords Adventures" kind of stuff for the Mario series with All-Stars sprites during the Gamecube era too. It would fit very well, since during this generation we technically didn't get a new 2D Mario on the GBA. |

The game's code relies on it having one layer only in this area and modifying it to revolve around two layers could unintentionally break something. You interact with the layer one frequently, like when you destroy a fortress, animated tiles, etc. I guess Mario's ability to move or not to move in the map relies on layer one's tiles too. Changing that to revolve around two layers could end up unintentionally breaking something in a game that's technically already finished. That would be hard to spot during development too, as they would need to replay the entire game. The ground being textured on the same layer is probably just a way to improve the graphics without needing to add another whole layer. But I could be wrong, though. This is just a guess. |

Since it's not complete in GL I haven't played BoA all the way through. And I didn't want to remove something that was relevant. You'd have to ask the devs why they titled it that way. For your other question, most sprites other than bosses are messy and the colors are off. I didn't think they'd be worth uploading due to the poor quality. |
