I should also point out how culture blind and insensitive PETA is because the raccoon form is not a raccoon at all. It's actually a reference to the youkai legends surrounding tanuki. The leaf is also part of the legend as tanukis use them to disguise as humans.
Tanukis in real life are a species of native fox-like canines that just happen to have the colouring of a raccoon. (Though they lack the striped tail and the face patches are different) They're often paired with the Japanese fox or kitsune in youkai legends.
