Those blushing expressions are used in level 5-5, somewhere about halfway through the level is a hot spring that restores your HP. A few seconds after you jump in, Mario starts blushing, and a few seconds after that he closes his eyes and sinks into the spring and just floats there.
hol up, these blushing expressions are unused... i wouldn't be suprised of they're leftovers from the scrapped original version of the game
