Pretty sure Polof is a reference to the rabbits from Totoro who do a similar thing.
Polof only appears ONCE in KDL3 in ONE level in ONE room, and ONLY EXISTS to show you a secret door. And he then NEVER appears in any game, INCLUDING SPIN-OFFS, ever again. What a legend.
