L doesn’t mean Link, it means Link Victory.
@Jod Dan: They're the sprites used for Link's "Victory" animation specifically (hence why there's a good chunk missing, to let the Triforce piece show through, and why the tips of his hands are visible in them).
What does “Link” mean? (in the shellmets)
No Luigi/Toad/Toadette front-facing sprites? :(

@CrazyMario64 well you are invisible it wouldn't be possible to see the character you are playing as
isn't there a big death sprite used for the error message when a user's page won't appear

Here's a misnaming I found. The "Mega" form in the game and promotional materials is called the "Big" form. The "Mega" form does not exist in this game. And when I said "Form", I meant the forms that require "Powerups" to transform into.

I think that Nintendo should have used the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe coloring for Luigi. If you look at media regarding Super Mario Bros. and The Lost Levels (including the Super Show), Luigi shows up in his SNES colors more often than his NES colors. Nintendo should additionally give Luigi a unique design.
