That's a really good idea there, imagine getting 5 Golden Bananas for tougher missions! Though that is not the case, it's actually supposed to be the early HUD icon for the Golden Banana total.

EDIT: A single frame of the Golden Banana Bunch appears on B. Locker's Head.
