OK, I'm seven years too late to be answering @theFlarbar, but for anyone else who was wondering: When you're a reasonable distance away from a pad, its model gets swapped out with a flat texture applied to the ground where it used to be.
Aren't these textures? I thought the pads were models instead of sprites.
