You can see which color is the true background by playing on a real NES.
Update: the background is the darkest shade of blue.

@IceCream What do you mean? this is all perfectly legit. It's 4 (counting transparency if there is any) colors per 16x16 pixel tile.
Also, I like how you swapped Birdo and Ostro just like in the original.
I'm surprised about how Nintendo managed to break the 3-color rule.
