@ValisEmma Pokémon was (and still is to a smaller extent) very popular to the point where it became mainstream pop culture. It was something that everyone knew about and had to have something or at least watch the latest episode back in the late 1990s, pretty much was the latest trend. It died off when the GBA games came out as people outside of the fans moved on, it did flare back up when Pokémon GO came out but settled back down.

Plus when the games came out and the anime was shown around the world, bootlegged games was at its peak. Companies were still bringing out NES and Mega Drive/Genesis games, the latter was at its twilight (near the end) period in general. Only Street Fighter II and the Mortal Kombat series come close with some Mario/Donkey Kong Country/Sonic for good measure. Pokémon also got a LOT of bootleg merch too.
