They just shrunk the Spider Mastermind sprite. They didn't even edit it. I'm glad they made the Arachnotron more unique in the final version.
and as pumpkin man said: "Arachnotrons in early Doom 2 versions were practically mini-spiderdemons."

Also the sprites for the "new" "Mindweaver" for the new expansion, "Legacy of Rust" which means this is also used.
@Kil-Bii Yeah you're right, it does look like a small version of the Spider Mastermind.
This version of Arachnotron looks older than stable version, literally small Spider Mastermind
