I guess because the NEW! 3DS doesn't have enough going for it to seem like a different system. The DSI was like going from Windows 95 to XP. There was a new ui, new programs, camera support, a web store...
The New 3ds was like swapping out your graphics card.

Yeah the DSi didn't really take off... Not many games took advantage, paid downloaded games was still early days on a console so not many were aware of the now closed DSi shop* plus it was also region locked that its successor 3DS was the same (most DS games weren't region locked but a few late ones were if played on a DSi and not the other models). People either stuck with DS/DS Lite, gone to the PSP (that in some places was already starting to decline, console sold pretty well though especially in mainland Europe), waiting for the 3DS or just played elsewhere e.g. 360, PS3, Wii, PC. Then again when it came out, my interest in gaming was fairly low outside of helping here.

* - A combination of not everyone had the Internet, changing Wi-Fi standards and I think the DSi shop had some size restrictions meant that a lot of retail games weren't possible? It wasn't like the 3DS/Vita where a majority of physical games also got a digital release, even the 360 and the PS3 were hit and miss whether a retail game got a digital release too but generally got better as the generation continued.

Usually when it comes to console updates, the last model is the least desired one (GBA Micro, PSP Go, Wii Mini, New 3DS, PS3 Super Slim). Speaking of which, wonder why here says DS / DSi but the 3DS doesn't say 3DS / New 3DS? (Even if it is more or less just Xenoblade, Fire Emblem Warriors and a few others.)

The DSI--Like a lot of late-gen console updates nobody seemed to care. At that point I had switched from Mario Kart DS to Modnation Racers, all my friends had switched to the PSP...The only person I knew with a DSI was my teacher.

She was a cool teacher. Several years prior she caught us using Pictochat during class by pretending to be another student in the chat room.

@flashlight There are DSi BIOS dumps out there, and even NO$GBA has DSi support, showing off it's use of homebrew for the DSi. There's also a few ways to softmod a DSi like through the Camera app by loading a photo, Flipnote with loading an animation, and one that was back in 2011, and was proboblly patched as it was made when Nintendo still did system updates to the DSi. This one I'm talking about is one where you would load a sound file to play a rom. I don't know if it's fake or not, or if it existed at one point, but I can't find much on that one.
